Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date 1500 Silver Dial on Steel 1973
Description
The Ref. 1500 sits at the center of Rolex's mid-century Oyster Perpetual Date lineage — a reference produced across the 1960s and into the 1970s that consolidated what the Date model had become: a 34mm, screw-down-crown Oyster case housing a certified chronometer movement, offered without complication or ornament. The serial range here places this example in 1973, toward the close of the reference's run, when Rolex's automatic calibers had reached a maturity that the later references would simply refine rather than reinvent. Plexiglass crystal, a smooth steel bezel, and applied line indices on the silver dial are the correct configuration for the period — nothing added, nothing softened.
The silver dial with line indices is the understated choice, and the right one. Engine-turned or colored dials from this era read as period costume; the silver sector ages into something quieter and more useful, a watch that disappears on the wrist until you look at it. In hand, the dial carries a warmth that flat photography consistently fails to render — a very slight patina that confirms originality without announcing it. The case, bracelet, bezel, and crystal all present in very good condition with hardly visible signs of wear, consistent with a watch that has been worn and cared for rather than stored and forgotten. Offered as watch only, with a warranty date of 1973 and all original parts.
In very good condition throughout. Watch only, no box or papers.
