Audemars Piguet Cobra Silver Dial on 18K White Gold
Description
The Audemars Piguet Cobra is among the more quietly significant pieces in the maison's vintage catalog — a sculptural, serpentine case form that predates the Royal Oak era and reflects the haute joaillerie sensibility AP brought to its dress watches through the 1960s and early 1970s. At 27 x 32mm, the case follows the organic, tapered geometry that gives the Cobra its name, a shape that demanded considerable hand-finishing and could only be realized in precious metal. This example is executed in 18k white gold throughout — case, bezel, and bracelet — with manual winding, as the movement architecture of the period demanded. The caliber is period-correct to the reference, a manually wound movement suited to the slim profile the Cobra's proportions require.
The silver dial with baton indices is the right configuration for this reference. A darker dial would compete with the white gold; the silver reads as a single tonal statement, the case and dial working as one surface rather than two. White gold was the less common choice against yellow gold production of the era, and it ages without the warm patina shift that yellow gold cases develop — what you see now is what the watch has always been. On the wrist, the Cobra's asymmetric form sits closer to a jewel than a timepiece, and no photograph has yet captured how the case planes catch light at the joint between the lugs and the bracelet.
Offered in very good condition across case, dial, crystal, bezel, bracelet, and caseback. Watch only, no box or papers.
