Rolex Oyster Perpetual 31 6551 Champagne Dial on Stainless steel and 18 karat yellow gold 1970
Description
The Ref. 6551 belongs to a quieter chapter of Rolex's Oyster Perpetual story — the 31mm two-tone dress watch produced through the late 1960s and into the 1970s, before the line consolidated around the more familiar all-steel references. Powered by the caliber 1130, a robust automatic movement with central seconds, the 6551 was built on the same Oyster case architecture — screw-down crown, water-resistant construction — that defined Rolex's reputation for durability, here dressed in stainless steel and solid 18-karat yellow gold. At 31mm it sits at a size that reads as genuinely unisex, neither a lady's watch nor a full men's piece, which gave it a versatility that collectors have come to appreciate on its own terms.
The champagne dial with stick indices — large bar markers in the collector's parlance — is the configuration that ages best in this reference. Where white or silver dials can read cold under artificial light, the champagne surface warms as the light shifts, pulling the gold case and bracelet into a coherent whole that photographs simply cannot settle. The two-tone Jubilee-style bracelet in steel and 18-karat yellow gold is original to the watch and retains the period proportions that later references lost when bracelets were revised for comfort over character.
In very good condition overall, offered as watch only from approximately 1970.
