Rolex Day-Date 18038 Champagne Dial on Leather

The Ref. 18038 sits at the center of the Day-Date's most consequential era. Rolex introduced the 18038 in 1978 as the direct successor to the 1803, bringing with it a sapphire crystal in place of acrylic and the Cal. 3055 — a movement that added the quickset date function, a meaningful practical advance that the earlier caliber lacked. The Day-Date had been Rolex's statement in solid gold since 1956, and the 18038 is the reference that carried that identity into the modern mechanical standard. Solid 18k yellow gold throughout, 36mm, with a screw-down crown and central seconds.

This example presents a champagne dial with baton indices — the configuration that ages most gracefully in yellow gold. Champagne reads warmer and more complex than white or silver against the case metal; the two reinforce each other rather than competing. The dial shows very good condition with hardly visible signs of wear, as does the case, bezel, and sapphire crystal. It is offered on leather, which suits the dress register of the reference better than a President bracelet for those who wear it that way. All original parts, original condition. In hand, the warmth of the dial shifts with the light in a way no photograph quite resolves.
