Rolex Datejust Oysterquartz 17014 Blue Dial on Stainless Steel Open Date
Description
The Ref. 17014 occupies a specific and underappreciated chapter in Rolex's history — the Datejust Oysterquartz, produced from 1977 through the early 2000s, was Rolex's answer to the integrated-bracelet aesthetic that defined Swiss watchmaking in the 1970s. Where the round Datejust followed a lineage stretching back to 1945, the Oysterquartz introduced an angular, brushed case with an integrated Jubilee-style bracelet engineered as a single architectural unit. Power here comes from the Cal. 5035, a quartz movement — not a concession, but a deliberate product for a buyer who wanted Rolex precision in a form that required nothing of them. The fluted bezel and two-tone gold and stainless steel construction place this example squarely in the dressy tier of the reference.
The blue dial is the configuration worth seeking. Against the more common champagne or silver dials, blue reads with a depth that shifts from near-navy in shadow to a cleaner slate under direct light — something a photograph consistently underrepresents. Baton indices keep the dial uncluttered, and the quick-set date function, a meaningful convenience upgrade introduced across the line, is present here. The serial number dates this example to the mid-1980s, a period when Oysterquartz production was well-established and component quality consistent. Original papers accompany the watch, which is increasingly rare for this reference at this age.
Offered in very good condition throughout — case, bracelet, bezel, and dial — as a full set with box and original Rolex papers.
