Hermès Kelly Cut Rouge H Swift Gold Hardware 2022

The Kelly Cut takes the front of the Kelly — sangles, touret, clochette — and draws it out into a clutch of roughly 31cm, shallow enough to sit flat under an arm. It runs in one size only, which makes leather and colour the whole of the decision.

Rouge H is among the oldest colours the house maintains: a deep red pulled toward brown rather than orange, dark enough to pass for a burgundy indoors and only resolving as red when it catches daylight. On Swift it goes deeper still. Swift is fine, nearly smooth, with a slight sheen, and it absorbs dye more thoroughly than any grained calfskin Hermès uses, so the colour reads as one unbroken field across a panel where a grain would have interrupted it.

Gold hardware follows the colour rather than contrasting it — warm against warm, which is the conventional reading of Rouge H and the reason the pairing has held.
