Hermès Birkin 35 Etoupe Togo Gold Hardware 2018

The 35 is the size the Birkin began at — the format Jean-Louis Dumas worked out after Jane Birkin sat beside him on a 1984 flight and told him nothing on the market held what she needed. The smaller sizes came later, and the 30 now takes most of the demand, but the 35 remains the one built for the job originally described.

Togo carries it well at that scale. Introduced in 1997, it is a pebbled calfskin with a raised grain and fine veining that resists scratching and light water, and it is unusually light for its substance — which is a real consideration on a bag this size, where the leather's own weight is part of what you carry. It holds its shape without going rigid.

Etoupe reads grey in flat light and brown in warm, and against gold hardware it settles toward the warmer end of that range.
