Hermès Birkin 25 Sauge Swift Palladium Hardware 2015

Swift is the leather to choose when the colour is the point. Fine-grained to the edge of smooth, with a slight sheen, it takes dye more deeply than any grained calfskin Hermès works — saturated colours read richest on it, and quiet ones read cleanest. Sauge is a soft sage green, and on Swift it holds as one continuous tone across the panels rather than breaking up over a grain.

At 25cm the Birkin is at its most compact, and Swift's softness suits that: the bag has some give to it, where a rigid leather at this size can read as a box. The trade is honest. Swift marks under pressure more readily than Togo or Epsom, and that is a characteristic of the leather rather than a flaw in the piece.

Palladium hardware, cool silver and tarnish-resistant, holds the green without warming it toward olive.
