Cartier Tank Black Dial on Leather
Description
The Cartier Tank, introduced in 1917, is the reference against which every rectangular dress watch is measured. This example belongs to the larger Tank format — 23x28mm in silver — a size that reads with authority on the wrist without crossing into the territory of the oversized novelties that followed decades later. The movement is manual winding, which in a Tank of this generation is the correct choice: the slim profile that defines the case architecture depends on it, and the ritual of winding connects the wearer to the object in a way a rotor never quite does. Roman numerals on the dial, a sapphire cabochon crown, and a sapphire crystal complete a configuration that has changed remarkably little because it needed to change remarkably little.
The black dial is the version worth seeking. Cartier's cream and silver dials are more common; black gives the Roman chapter ring a graphic clarity that photographs flatten entirely — in hand, the contrast between the applied indices and the dark ground has a depth that only reveals itself under direct light. The leather strap keeps the case close to the wrist, which is where a Tank of this proportion belongs. Original condition throughout.
Offered in very good condition, watch only.
