Cartier Ellipse 78091 White Dial on Leather
Description
The Cartier Ellipse, introduced in 1968 and built around the proportions of the golden ratio, is among the most architecturally considered cases in the French maison's history. Reference 78091 — the Jumbo variant — extends those elliptical proportions to 32.5 x 29mm, a size that reads with quiet authority on the wrist without abandoning the form's essential delicacy. The movement is manual winding, which suits the Ellipse's philosophy: no rotor bulk to compromise the case's slim profile, and the ritual of daily winding is part of the relationship. Solid 18 karat yellow gold throughout, from bezel to case, gives the reference a warmth that steel and two-tone examples simply cannot replicate.
The white dial with Roman indices is the correct configuration for this reference — the numerals echo Cartier's cartographic tradition and read with a clarity that baton indices would flatten into something generic. Yellow gold and white together have a period-correct coherence that later colorways lack. This example retains its original Cartier-service sticker, a detail that speaks to careful, unaltered custody — the kind of provenance that matters to a collector more than a box ever could. In certain light, the dial has a faint warmth that photographs render as flat white but the eye reads as something closer to cream.
Offered in very good condition across case, dial, crystal, bezel, bracelet, and caseback, with watch only.
