Cartier Diabolo 1450 White Dial on Leather
Description
The Cartier Diabolo ref. 1450 arrived in 1990 as one of the house's more architecturally ambitious designs — a case whose curved, barrel-shaped profile drew from Art Deco geometry rather than the cleaner lines of the Santos or Tank lineage. This example carries additional significance: it is a limited edition produced to mark Cartier's 150th anniversary, a designation that placed it among the more deliberately commemorative pieces the maison issued during that period. The 27mm case is 18 karat solid yellow gold throughout, fitted with a sapphire crystal and a sapphire cabochon crown — the latter a Cartier signature that elevates the winding crown from a functional element to a deliberate jewel. Movement is quartz, appropriate for a dress watch of this proportion and intent.
The white dial with Roman numerals is the correct choice for this reference. Roman indices read as inherently formal against yellow gold in a way that applied batons simply do not, and the combination here is coherent rather than decorative. The original Cartier buckle is present, which matters — replacement hardware on a piece like this disrupts the integrity of the object in ways that are immediately apparent to anyone handling it. The leather strap keeps the wrist presence light, which suits the 27mm case well.
Offered in very good condition overall, with light wear to the case, crystal, bracelet hardware, and bezel; the caseback shows slightly more use. Watch only, no box or papers.
