Rolex Air King 5501 Silver Dial on Leather 1967
Description
The Rolex Air King ref. 5501 belongs to the generation that established the Air King as a distinct line rather than a simplified Oyster variant. Produced through the 1960s, the 5501 ran on the caliber 1520 — a self-winding movement with a Glucydur balance and Microstella regulation that Rolex refined across this era into one of its most dependable workhorse calibers. The 34mm Oyster case, with its screw-down crown, gave the reference the same water resistance architecture as far more expensive references in the catalog. Two-tone construction here means an 18k yellow gold bezel and caseback paired with a stainless steel mid-case — a combination that reads as considered rather than ostentatious, and one that Rolex executed with a consistency that all-gold or all-steel versions don't quite replicate.
The silver dial with line indices is the correct choice for this reference: applied baton markers age with a restraint that the rarer gilt variants can't always sustain, and on a two-tone case the silver registers as a coherent whole. The plexiglass crystal, original to the period, carries a warmth that no sapphire replacement returns — it bends light rather than cutting it, and the dial beneath reads differently depending on where you hold it. This example dates to 1967 by its warranty card, and presents in original condition throughout.
