Patek Philippe Calatrava 96 Silver Dial on Leather 1950
Description
The Ref. 96 is where the Calatrava begins. Introduced in 1932 and produced continuously for decades, it established the proportional language — the thin case, the clean dial, the absence of ornament — that defines Patek Philippe's dress watch identity to this day. This example dates to 1950, placing it in the heart of the reference's mid-century run, when the Cal. 10-200 was the movement inside: a manually wound caliber of modest diameter and considerable refinement, with a small seconds subdial at six o'clock that gives the dial its only asymmetry. At 31mm in 18-karat yellow gold, it reads as a dress watch in the original sense — sized for the wrist of its era, worn close, never announcing itself.
The silver dial with baton indices is the correct configuration for this reference. Applied hour markers would have added weight; printed ones would have cheapened it. Batons in yellow gold against silver achieve the restraint the design demands. The plexi crystal, original to the period, does something no sapphire replacement can: it holds light softly, giving the dial a warmth that photographs consistently understate. The case, bezel, bracelet, and glass all present in very good condition with hardly visible signs of wear — consistent with a piece that has been kept, not neglected.
Offered in very good condition, watch only, with a service date of July 2026.
