Hermès Kelly 28 Graphite Shiny Porosus Crocodile Palladium Hardware 2002

Porosus is the saltwater crocodile: small scales, tightly symmetrical, the pattern running in ordered rows and tightening toward the edges of the panel. The shine is not a coating. The skin is polished by hand with an agate stone until the surface takes a glass-like finish — a process that reads immediately in the room and almost never photographs as it looks.

Graphite is a cool, dark grey, and on glazed Porosus it behaves less like a colour than a depth, the scales holding light at different angles as the bag turns. On a Kelly the single rolled handle is where the work shows: there is no flat panel to hide behind, and the scale run across it either carries cleanly or it does not.

Palladium hardware, cool silver and tarnish-resistant, is the correct register for a grey skin.
