Hermès Birkin 35 Rubis Togo Palladium Hardware 2010

Hermès introduced the Birkin in 1984, after Jane Birkin sat beside Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight and told him nothing on the market held what she needed. The silhouette has not materially changed since. The 35 is the largest of the three standard sizes and the one closest to that original brief — a bag meant to be filled.

Rubis is a clear, saturated red, and Togo gives it somewhere to sit. The pebbled grain introduced in 1997 has a raised, finely veined surface that catches light unevenly, so the red keeps variation across the panel instead of reading as one flat field. Togo also resists scratches and light water and stays light for its structure, which is worth something at 35cm.

Palladium hardware, cool silver and tarnish-resistant, cuts the red rather than warming it.
