Cartier Tank Française 1840 Silver Dial on Leather 2003
Description
The Cartier Tank Française Ref. 1840 belongs to a chapter in the Tank's long history that collectors now regard as a high point of the integrated-bracelet era. Introduced in the mid-1990s, the Française departed from the Louis and Américaine by wrapping the case directly into its bracelet links — a structural decision, not a stylistic one — so that the watch reads as a single continuous object on the wrist. This example is the large men's size in 18-karat solid yellow gold, 28×32mm, powered by an automatic movement with central seconds, date, and quick-set — a practical caliber dressed in serious metal.
The silver dial with Roman numerals is the correct choice in yellow gold: the warm case and the cool, clean dial create a contrast that the champagne-dialed alternatives flatten. Cartier's blued-steel hands and the characteristic chemin de fer railway-track minute chapter do the rest. On the wrist, the all-gold construction has a weight and presence that photographs consistently understate — the case and bracelet move together in a way that feels considered rather than heavy. The sapphire crystal and original Cartier buckle are present, and the watch retains its original papers dated 2003.
In very good condition throughout, with hardly visible signs of wear on the case, bracelet, crystal, and bezel. Offered with papers only.
