Cartier Clé de Cartier 3850 White Dial on Stainless steel 2015
Description
The Clé de Cartier, introduced in 2015, represented a genuine structural departure for the maison. Where most Cartier sport and dress references had long relied on the winding crown as a purely functional appendage, the Clé — French for key — made the crown the defining formal gesture of the case. The ref. 3850 in 40mm stainless steel houses an automatic movement visible through a display caseback, a detail that rewards the curious without demanding it. Roman numerals, a Cartier constant since the Santos, read here at a scale that suits the 40mm diameter without crowding the dial.
The white dial on this example is the correct choice over the silver-toned variants that photograph similarly but read differently in hand — this one holds a cooler, more legible tone under varied light, and the applied Roman chapters sit against it with genuine contrast. The stainless steel bracelet and bezel keep the composition coherent, neither dressing the watch up nor pulling it toward utility. In person, the crown-as-key detail is the thing photographs consistently flatten: the way it sits proud of the case and invites the wrist to engage with it changes how the watch feels to wind and set. This is a 2015 example, from the reference's debut year, with original Cartier papers.
Offered in very good condition, with papers. No box.
