Cartier 21 Must de Cartier 1340 Silver Dial on Stainless Steel & Yellow Gold
Description
The 21 Must de Cartier arrived in 1973 as Cartier's answer to a more accessible, sport-inflected market — a departure from the dress codes of the Santos and Tank, built instead around a square case, integrated bracelet, and a geometry that read as modern rather than classical. Ref. 1340 is the 28mm ladies' expression of that line, running a quartz movement and wearing the two-tone construction — stainless steel case and bracelet paired with a yellow gold bezel — that defined the series at its most recognizable. The sapphire crystal, Roman numeral chapter ring, and silver dial are all period-correct, and the proportions at 28mm sit comfortably without reading as a shrunken version of anything larger.
The two-tone configuration is the one to have in this reference. An all-steel example loses the contrast that gives the 21's angular geometry its definition; the yellow gold bezel frames the silver dial in a way that a monochrome bracelet simply doesn't. In hand, the dial has a quiet warmth that photographs flatten entirely — the interplay between the brushed steel links and the polished gold bezel is something you notice on the wrist, not on a screen.
