Introduced in 1973, the Mark III was the first Speedmaster to house an automatic movement — the caliber 1040, a column-wheel chronograph movement based on the Lemania 1341 architecture, with a column wheel governing the start-stop-reset sequence rather than the cam-and-lever system found in lesser chronographs of the era. The column wheel is the more mechanically refined solution: it engages the chronograph functions with a positive, consistent feel that a cam system approximates but never quite matches. At 41mm in stainless steel, the case is larger than the classic 42mm Moonwatch only appears, because the Mark III wears differently — rounder lugs, a more integrated bracelet, a profile that sits lower on the wrist.

This example presents the black dial with line indices, the correct and more legible configuration for this reference. The stainless steel bezel and bracelet are original, and the serial number dates production to 1973 — an early example from the reference's run. In hand, the matte black dial absorbs light in a way that photographs consistently fail to render; the registers read with a depth that a scan flattens entirely. All parts are original, and the watch retains its period character without restoration.

Offered in very good condition, watch only.
